Do not soak the wooden saucer.■ About This Piece* Made of Seto ware (瀬戸焼) earthenware and hand-formed at the Rokubei (六兵衛) Kiln in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture. Each piece is thrown on a potter's wheel using techniques practiced here for over 400 years.* Within Seto ware, pieces made in the Akazu district are known as Akazu-yaki. Work of this quality, produced with traditional techniques, is certified as a national traditional craft of Japan.* The Rokubei Kiln is among the most representative kilns of Seto Akazu-yaki. It is also known for the matcha tea bowls used at the Japan Pavilion of Expo Milano, and for pieces presented as gifts to delegates of the Ise-Shima Summit.* Kannyu (crackle glaze) refers to the fine cracks that form in the glaze as the piece cools after firing. These are a feature of the glaze surface, not damage to the clay body. As the cup is used day to day, the pattern gradually shifts and deepens — a process Japanese collectors describe as "nurturing the landscape" of the vessel, and one reason such pieces become so personal over time.* The ivy is painted freehand in iron oxide before glazing, so no two cups carry quite the same line. Ivy has long been favored in Japan as a motif of continuity — it keeps climbing and spreading, year after year.* Oribe (織部) is a lustrous green glaze named after Furuta Oribe, a senior disciple of the tea master Sen no Rikyu, who favored it.
