RARE Antique Stanley No. 113 Type 1 Circular Compass Plane - Pat. 1877 & 1879Up for auction is an exceptionally rare, highly collectible Stanley No. 113 Type 1 Circular / Compass Plane. Manufactured for a very brief window between 1877 and 1880, the Type 1 is the first configuration of this iconic plane and is a crown jewel for any serious antique Stanley tool collector.This plane features the beautiful, ornate aesthetic characteristics that Stanley only used on their earliest premium models before simplifying the castings for mass production.Key Type 1 Diagnostic Features Present:The "Dovetail Lug" Plate: The side interlocking plate mechanism features the clear, authentic PAT'D JUNE 17, 79 stamping. Crucially for a Type 1, the dovetail section extends outwards and is cut away on the side to clear the gears (changed to a flush profile in Type 2).Embossed Front Knob: The large front sole adjustment knob proudly displays the fully raised perimeter lettering: STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO. PAT. SEPT. 25, 1877."Greek Key" Castings: Both the large front knob and the smaller lever cap clamping screw feature the iconic, intricate embossed Greek Key / maze decorative relief pattern.Solid Adjuster Wheel: Features the early-style solid 4-hole cast depth adjustment wheel with a knurled edge.Condition Report:Body & Japanning: The cast iron frame retains a beautiful amount of its original black japanned finish with honest, minor wear consistent with its ~145-year age. No cracks or welds detected in the main body.Flexible Sole: The flexible spring-steel sole is intact, moves smoothly, and responds perfectly to the front adjustment knob mechanism to shape for convex or concave work.Hardware & Threading: All adjustment screws, knobs, and the lever cap move freely and thread smoothly. The decorative brass/metal details retain wonderful, unpolished patina.Blade/Iron: Included is the correct vintage iron, PAT. MAR. 20, 1877 stamp.
