View Stanley Bailey patent first lateral No 2 wood plane nice except for lever cap with current marketplace pricing, condition, product images and item details. The lateral lever is the first style lever, made before Stanley went to the round disc, and made from 1885 to 1888 only. That first lateral lever was used on the Type 5 plane. Not everything about this plane perfectly fits the Type 5 planes, as the body is not marked on the front end (which would be correct on a Type 4), the front knob is not beaded, and the iron is newer by a few years with the 1892 patent date. You are bidding on one Stanley No 2 wood plane as pictured. There is one serious condition issue, which is that the lever cap appears to be a ground down Number 3 cap. Please keep reading down to the condition paragraphs. It is not marked anywhere on the body, but is marked "PAT FEB 8, 76 STANLEY PAT OCT 21, 84" on the lateral lever, "BAILEY'S PATENT AUG 31, 1858 AUG 6, 1867" on the brass adjusting nut with some of the mark very faint, and "STANLEY PAT AP'L 19 92" on the iron. The chip breaker is not marked.Overall length of the body including the tail under the rear handle is not quite 7-1/2". The iron is about 1-9/16" in width and about 6-3/16" in overall length. The lever cap is almost a 32nd over 1-5/8" at the lower edge (dial calipers say 1.65"), and is almost a 32nd under 1-5/8" where it starts to taper down towards the lever. 5/8" would be 1.625". I suspect that the lever cap is a cut down Number 3 cap, based on how thin the sides are on the back side, but it is possible that it is an original Number 2 cap.The front knob and rear handle have been refinished, and they may not be original to this plane. The iron is a replacement, but the other changes could be just a matter of timing, as not every Type change happened on the same day. An early Type 5 frog could have been paired with a Type 4 body, for example. Condition other than those issues is generally very good. The bottom and sides have some modest scratches and dings, and a few hints of faint pitting. The japanning is quite worn in places, and there are some bits of paint or glue to clean off. The front knob has been refinished, has one tight check, and some minor scratches and dings in the wood. The rear handle has been refinished more recently, and is in excellent condition. The frog screws have double washers, and the lateral lever has some pitting. The iron has some patina (color) but only a hint of pitting. The chip breaker was aggressively cleaned with some scratches, and is bowed towards the upper end. The lever is very good with no chips, but again may not be original as noted above. Except as noted, there are no cracks or chips or chunks missing from any of the castings, and everything turns or operates properly.SHIPPING: 3 or 4 pounds when boxed, shipped US Postal Service Ground Advantage, insurance and tracking and delivery confirmation signature are included. No International shipping. l sell what I enjoy, and I collect antique woodworking tools and I enjoy photography! The queue is overflowing with tools right now, as they seem to be finding me faster than I can list them. So please keep watching as I have LOTS more to list!ETHICS IN DESCRIPTIONS: I also buy for my collecting on eBay, and I have been burned too many times by misleading (duh did I forget to mention .......) descriptions, and auctions with pictures only of the left side because the right side was trashed. Life is much simpler for me if I disclose what I know or see about an item before you bid, and especially before you receive it in the mail. I come from the handshake school of doing business, and hopefully you are like me and understand what that means. What goes around, comes around. RETURN POLICY: I believe that if you give honest descriptions, and include enough pictures, you shouldn't need a return policy. However, that doesn't mean that I won't make an occasional mistake. Please bid with the assurance that if I have made an error in my listing, I WILL take care of you. SHIPPING: I use the US Post Office for everything. If the value is $250 or over, I will always require a delivery confirmation signature, which eBay requires for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: I no longer ship Internationally other than Canada. If you are in Canada, ask for what the shipping would cost, but be prepared for it to be $$$$$. NEWSLETTER: Every Friday eBay sends out an email with my newsletter featuring 10 of my most interesting new listings. To subscribe, click on the heart symbol that is labeled SAVE SELLER, and that will automatically get you on the mailing list for the newsletters. They are free, and you can unsubscribe at any time.SELLING OUTSIDE OF EBAY: Why would I risk my lengthy good standing with eBay to save you a couple of dollars? Especially when you ask on an email that is sent through the eBay email system which they are reading? Please don't ask, the answer is no.AUCTIONS: I won’t end an auction listing early to sell it to you directly. As a bidder, I really dislike going back at the end of an auction to bid, only to discover that the seller had ended the auction early. So I won’t do that for you, or to you.PACKAGING: Please check my feedback -- I package well. I understand how disappointing it is to receive a purchase where the seller clearly didn't care about how it was packaged. I work to package everything with lots of protection for it, and I always use a new box or new envelope. OFFERS: I will always consider an offer, some longer than others. Your best chance of success happens if the item has been listed for a while, your offer is reasonable (to me!), and you are a regular customer. I am a long-time active member of the PNTC or Pacific Northwest Tool Collectors, and a long distance member of the MWTCA or Mid-West Tool Collectors Association. And once in a while I might turn up at a PAST meeting! I hope someday I will meet some of you as we trudge the happy road of tool collecting! Condition: Used.
