We regularly come across exceptional vintage American-made hand tools during our estate sale runs across Northern California and Nevada, and this measuring device is a fantastic piece of history. While sometimes casually referred to as a measuring tape, this is actually a classic 3-foot (36-inch) 4-fold carpenter's rule. It is a fantastic addition for collectors of early American measuring devices or anyone looking to put a century-old tool back to work. Item Details & Condition: Manufacturer: Stanley Material: Made of Boxwood and Brass. Boxwood was the premium choice for vintage toolmakers due to its incredible density, straight grain, and resistance to warping over time. Format: 36-inch total length, folding down into four equal sections. Hardware: Features traditional brass arch joints and brass end caps to protect the tips from wear. Condition: The rule is stamped "WARRANTED" and "BOXWOOD". The wood has developed a deep, authentic patina from decades of workshop use, with some natural darkening particularly visible around the central brass hinge. Despite its age, the numbered markings remain highly legible. Please review all photos closely for exact aesthetic condition. Historical & Production Information: This specific folding rule dates back to Stanley’s highly sought-after "Sweetheart" era. The prominent logo stamped onto the wood—a notched rectangle containing a heart with the letters "SW" inside, with "MADE IN U.S.A." below—indicates that this rule was manufactured between 1920 and 1935. The iconic "Sweetheart" logo was introduced following the 1919 merger of the Stanley Rule & Level plant with Stanley Works. The "SW" inside the heart was a tribute to William Hart, the company's long-time president. During this golden age of hand tool manufacturing, the Sweetheart logo became a universally recognized symbol of top-tier American craftsmanship. Condition: Used.
