A substantial antique Stanley duplex adjustable carpenter’s level, featuring richly toned wood, heavy brass fittings, and three liquid-filled vials. Measuring 30¼ inches long and weighing approximately 3½ pounds, it has the weight, craftsmanship, and well-earned wear of a serious working tool.Made by the Stanley Rule & Level Company of New Britain, Connecticut, this example is estimated to date circa 1896–1906, based on its patent markings and earlier externally accessible adjustment hardware. It is likely a No. 30, although the model number has not been confirmed. The duplex design gives this level particular interest. In addition to the conventional top-mounted horizontal vial, it features two circular adjustable side-vial assemblies. Stanley designed this arrangement to provide additional viewing options, particularly when working overhead. The secondary side level could also be turned to serve as another plumb vial. Its brass details include a long shaped top plate, a small fitting marked “Adjusting Screw,” large circular vial surrounds, projecting lips around the side viewing openings, and protective end fittings. The circular assemblies bear the March 25, 1890 patent date, while the maker’s plate carries patent dates from 1891 and 1896.This is a tool from the period when carpenters relied on carefully fitted glass, seasoned wood, and mechanical adjustment to establish level and plumb. Its darkened brass and numerous handling marks give it a strong workshop presence, equally appealing in an antique tool collection or displayed among architectural salvage and traditional woodworking tools.MeasurementsLength: 30¼ inchesWidth: 3 1/16 inchesThickness: 1¼ inchesWeight: approximately 3½ poundsConditionWell-used antique condition with numerous dents, dings, scratches, and wear to the wood and brass. The brass retains a mellow, darkened patina, with brighter wear on exposed edges. All three vials retain liquid and visible bubbles. Small drilled hole on the side of the level.
