For Sale is an Awesome 1976 KISS PSA Type 1 Original Photo! This incredible 1976 photograph captures KISS in one of the more unusual and humorous portraits from the height of the band’s rise to superstardom. Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons, and Peter Criss appear together in their unmistakable stage makeup, but instead of their usual black leather, studs, and towering stage costumes, the group is surrounded by Christmas decorations. Dressed in light-colored robes and draped in garland, the four pose with holiday wreaths, candles, and other festive props, creating a bizarre contrast between the wholesome imagery of a traditional Christmas portrait and the outrageous image that made KISS one of the most recognizable rock bands in the world. The photograph was taken by noted rock photographer Neal Preston, whose name appears on the PSA label. The timing makes the photograph especially interesting. By 1976, KISS had exploded into the mainstream following the success of Alive! and were in the middle of one of the defining years of their career, releasing both Destroyer and Rock and Roll Over. Their theatrical makeup, pyrotechnics, costumes, and larger-than-life concerts also made the group an easy target for critics who viewed hard rock as dangerous or corrupting. While the exact intent behind this particular shoot shouldn’t be assumed without its original publication context, the photograph certainly plays with that contrast. Seeing a band whose image could seem almost demonic to its critics suddenly surrounded by Christmas wreaths and holiday decorations gives the portrait an unmistakably tongue-in-cheek quality. The Photo is 8x10in and is in Authenticated and Encapsulated by PSA as a Type 1 Original Photo! What makes this photograph so great is how completely it captures the humor behind KISS’s image. Beneath the fire-breathing, blood-spitting and intimidating costumes was a band that understood spectacle and never seemed afraid to exaggerate its own mythology. Here, the full makeup remains, but virtually everything surrounding it has been turned upside down with robes, wreaths, garland and candles. Taken in 1976 at the height of the original lineup’s rise, it is a fantastic Neal Preston portrait that combines rock history, humor, and the unmistakable visual identity of KISS in a single frame.
