Disston & Sons No. 7 28" Rip Saw – Philadelphia – Circa 1878–1888 Offered for your consideration is an early H. Disston & Sons No. 7 rip saw, manufactured in Philadelphia during the late 19th century. This is the large 28-inch rip version with approximately 5-1/2 points per inch, fitted with the distinctive heavy two-handed or “Centennial”-style handle used on Disston's long rip saws. The saw retains its early H. DISSTON & SONS / PHILADA medallion with keystone-and-scales trademark, four brass saw fasteners, and the original nib near the toe of the blade, which is intact. Based primarily upon the medallion style and other construction details, this example dates approximately 1878–1888. The original blade etching is still present. It has become faint with age and surface oxidation, but portions of the original lettering and design become considerably more visible when the blade is viewed under angled or raking light. Photographs of the etching were deliberately taken with light directed across the blade at different angles to show the surviving etch as accurately as possible. Importantly, the blade has not been aggressively cleaned, sanded, buffed or polished in an attempt to make the etching more visible. I chose to preserve the original aged surface rather than risk damaging the remaining factory etch. The blade has an overall mottled gray patina with oxidation, staining, scratches and scattered areas of surface corrosion consistent with a saw of this age. Please examine the photographs closely for the condition of the blade. The sculpted wooden handle remains very attractive and retains considerable original character. It shows normal age-related wear, scratches, small marks and finish loss, but has not been refinished. There are no patent dates stamped into the wood handle. This is an increasingly difficult to find early configuration of Disston's well-known No. 7—a substantial 28-inch rip saw with the distinctive two-handed handle, early medallion and surviving original factory etch. Condition: Antique, used condition with substantial age-related patina and oxidation as shown. The blade etch is faint but surviving and is best seen under angled lighting. Handle shows age and use wear. No attempt has been made to cosmetically restore the saw. A nice example for a Disston collector, antique-tool collection, or display, particularly for someone who values an early saw that has not been over-cleaned or refinished.
