St. Nicholas stands in a stone archway under a blue sky, in a white and gold mitre and a red cope. A basket of red apples rests on his arm. The toddler in pink reaches for the doll, and her sister in a blue dress holds her up. A window with a pot of red flowers and a sprig of holly on the stones finish the corner. That many faces, hands and small objects on a curved, carved front take the artist several days. The back has a golden sash, gold scrolling vines with green leaves, and white stars. The figure himself is Santa, and St. Nicholas appears only in the painting. The staff has a gold spear-shaped top and lifts out of his mitten. He stands 9.5 inches tall, with a formal look that suits Victorian Christmas decor on a mantel, a sideboard or a shelf. A carved Santa with St. Nicholas painted at the cottage door. Condition: New.
