This is an interesting piece of Pennsylvania coal mining history. This is a vintage Scripto Vu-Lighter advertising Shade Mining Company of Friedens, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, a bituminous coal mining business associated with the region's long history of coal production. The company was located in the Johnstown–Somerset coal mining region. This lighter dates from the 1960s. This American-made lighter features the company's distinctive SHADE logo, incorporating a green evergreen tree, displayed through its transparent, amber-tinted fuel reservoir. Manufactured by Scripto, Inc., the lighter features a shiny chrome-finished flip-top lid, black ribbed upper section, flint-wheel ignition mechanism, and side-mounted fuel control button, with the manufacturer's identification and patent information stamped on the lighter. The lighter is in good vintage used condition, exhibiting slight discoloration and residue around the ignition mechanism, and age-related mild yellowing of the transparent body, while the original Shade Mining Company advertising remains clearly legible and attractive. The lid opens as shown in the photographs, but the lighter has not been tested for ignition or its ability to maintain a flame and is offered as a collectible rather than a guaranteed working lighter (see scans). This is an interesting piece of Pennsylvania coal mining history. Condition: Used. Category: Collectibles › Tobacciana › Lighters › Other Collectible Lighters. Brand: Scripto Vue.
