A circular plane has a thin, flexible steel sole that bends to a convex or concave curve, so it can plane curved edges, chair parts, and shaped work that a standard plane can't follow. This is a vintage Stanley No. 20 circular plane, also called a compass plane, made in the USA. The large knurled knob is marked "No. 20, Made in U.S.A.," the iron is stamped "Stanley, Made in USA," "Stanley" is cast into both ends of the body, and the frog carries a red Stanley decal. A circular plane has a thin, flexible steel sole that bends to a convex or concave curve, so it can plane curved edges, chair parts, and shaped work that a standard plane can't follow.It is complete as shown, with a cast-iron body in glossy black japanning, a nickel-plated lever cap and cap iron, a brass depth adjusting nut, the big curvature adjusting knob and its small locking thumbscrew, and the sole clamps and hinge at both ends. The photos show it from several angles, including the markings, the sole, the mouth, the iron, and the adjusting mechanism.Condition is good with honest age wear. The black paint is mostly glossy with a few small chips and marks. The sole is gray steel with mottled rust and tarnish and light pitting. The iron has some rust spotting and a rough patch near the bevel, and the cutting edge has not been sharpened or tuned. The knob and screw threads show some rust and wear.This is a used vintage tool sold as pictured. I have not tested the curve adjustment or planed with it. Condition: Used.
