View Antique German Lauscha Style Glass Silvered Olive Ornament c1900-1920 Jumbo 5.5" with current marketplace pricing, condition, product images and item details. Origin: Germany, likely Thuringian / Lauscha glassmaking tradition. Based on its construction, silvered finish, decoration and early-style hardware, I believe this example dates to theearly 20th century, likely circa 1900–1920. A remarkable early German blown-glass Christmas ornament from my family's collection, measuring approximately 5 1/2" tall including the hanging loop and 3" wide. This unusually large ornament is formed in the traditional German “olive” (Olive) shape—a historic Christmas ornament form strongly associated with the glassmaking tradition of Lauscha, Thuringia, Germany. Based on its construction, silvered finish, decoration and early-style hardware, I believe this example dates to the early 20th century, likely circa 1900–1920.The delicate glass was individually blown and shaped into an exceptionally large, full-bodied olive form that tapers to a finely worked point at the bottom. Its approximately 5 1/2" size is particularly impressive for this type of thin early glass. The ornament is internally silvered and has developed beautiful natural aging over the decades. Today the finish displays a distinctive combination of pale celadon/seafoam green, silver, champagne and soft gold tones, with mottling and oxidation throughout the original silvering.Especially appealing is the elaborate hand-applied white decoration. Flowing sprays of elongated leaves are combined with fine parallel pinstriping, crosshatched/lattice details and graceful arrangements of small dots. The organic botanical treatment has a wonderful Jugendstil / Art Nouveau influence characteristic of decorative work from around the turn of the 20th century. The ornament retains a very small unmarked early-style metal cap and simple wire hanging loop, both showing substantial natural oxidation consistent with age.ConditionRemarkably well preserved structurally considering its apparent age and unusually large, delicate form. The blown-glass body remains intact, including the pointed lower tip. I observed no cracks or major chips. The original silvered finish shows extensive age-related oxidation, mottling, spotting and areas of silvering loss. The white hand decoration has scattered wear and losses consistent with age. The metal cap and hanging loop have considerable oxidation/patina.These signs of age have been left untouched. The cap and hanger have not been polished or restored. Please examine all photographs carefully. Several photographs taken with light passing through the ornament are included to show the thin blown glass and the condition and aging of the internal silvering.DetailsOrigin: Germany, likely Thuringian / Lauscha glassmaking traditionPeriod: Early 20th century, believed circa 1900–1920Form: Traditional German “Olive”Material: Blown glassFinish: Internally silveredDecoration: Hand-applied white botanical, line, lattice and dot decorationStyle influence: Jugendstil / Art NouveauHeight: Approx. 5 1/2" including hanging loopWidth: Approx. 3"Cap: Unmarked early-style metal capProvenance: From a long-held family Christmas ornament collectionAn especially attractive survivor of the early German glass-ornament tradition, distinguished by its jumbo size, delicate blown construction, unusual hand decoration and beautifully aged silvered finish.
